Gambero Rosso – Francesco Carfagna – Winemaker of the year 2026

It happened!
Pickaxe
Spade
Terrace upon terrace
Sweat
Toil
Stubbornness
Building
Restoring
Family, YES
Family, NO
Hunched backs
Hardship
Success!

We, the Carfagna family, united in a project that turned a dream into reality, want to share our emotion and our unexpected joy. Francesco Carfagna, the founder of Altura Vigneto on Isola del Giglio, has been named Winemaker of the Year by Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia 2026 guide. The “winemaker” takes the stage a little emotional, perhaps?
He begins: the words tumble out.
Quick
Deep breaths
Powerful ideas
Some understand him… and some don’t
Laughter
Applause
He speaks truthfully, fully aware of what he is saying, because he speaks from the heart.

Rome, October 12th 2025 at "Roma Convention Center La Nuvola"

We, his family, are moved; we stand by him, and together we want to express our gratitude to all the ANGELS who, in so many forms, support us and others like us.

To the old masters first of all; to friends; to so many colleagues, collaborators, experts, supporters; to the saintly and passionate professionals.

To all our loyal customers, to drinkers, restaurateurs, hosts, importers, enthusiasts. To the Consorzio ViniVeri and to Vini di Vignaioli.

To the Gargano family in full, to Luca, to Triple “A,” and to the whole Velier team. To the Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori of Grosseto, and to the editors of Gambero Rosso and Slow Wine.

To Maestro Vinicio Capossela, passionate singer, connoisseur, and drinker, and to Maestro trumpeter Roy Paci.

To all those who believed in us from the beginning.
As Giacomo Mojoli, a true designer of ideas, says:

“Let’s face forward!

Bravo, Francesco, my great old friend. These are well-deserved satisfactions. A special recognition. It is like saying that behind a wine as unique as this Ansonaco, there is also a beautiful person, as unique as you. I remember the surprise I caused when, in 2010, I proposed taking your Ansonaco 2009 to the finals. To the astonishment of some, and to my great joy, it won the Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses). Back then, it was a kind of quiet revolution. Today, things have changed, thankfully.

A big hug, and congratulations on your pataphysical and authentic passion. You have moved the audience, bringing euforiglia: a mix of euphoria and  “meraviglia” (wonder).”
